About this Project

In the Fall 2019 semester, the Penn State University Clarinet Choir needed someone to alto clarinet. I agreed to fill this role because I thought it might be funny – it was my turn to play the joke instrument of the band world. Little did I know that I would have any sort of affinity towards the instrument. Over the last three years, I have grown more interested in performing on alto clarinet in a solo capacity. After some cursory searches, I realized that there is not only very limited solo repertoire for the alto clarinet, but also there are no exhaustive lists of solo works for the instrument. During the Spring 2022 semester, I developed a proposal to research solo repertoire for the alto clarinet which is when this project began. Over the past academic year, I have been compiling a list of all music published for solo alto clarinet. In addition, I have made reference recordings of some of the more substantial works found. This project was funded by the Penn State University Student Engagement Grant.
