Conducting
My journey as a conductor has seen many challenges! Having started my conducting instruction while being a completely remote student because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to find unique ways to learn a complex art. With the help of my professor, Dr. Kathryn Hylton, my conducting has evolved throughout my music career.
Serenade, Op. 7
This video represents my abilities as a beginning conductor. Due to learning in a remote environment, you will notice that there is no music! I had rely on my audiation skills to be able to imagine having an ensemble in front of me.
At The River
During my second semester of conducting, I was able to be back on campus and learning in person! This allowed me to have real singers in my test choir. This video is my first time being assessed and having my gesture actually change the music being heard.
Sure on this Shining Night
Receiving in person conducting instruction had a profound effect on my abilities. Just over one semester, I improved so much. I conducted my final assessment of the semester memorized. This allowed me to demonstrate significant improvements in cuing and showing expression and dynamics.
Ubi Caritas
During my last semester of instruction in Advanced Choral Conducting, I focused mostly on the pedagogical aspects of my conducting gesture. I worked hard to achieve more hand independence in order to help singers perform the piece to their best ability.
4th-8th Grade Chorus
In my current teaching position, I teach and conduct 4th-8th grade choral ensembles. This is a performance of White Christmas by my 7th/8th grade chorus in our 2023 Winter Concert.
